Red eyelids, crusty eyelashes, burning sensation. Blepharitis is a common inflammation of the eyelid margin, bothersome but well-controlled.

What is blepharitis?

Inflammation of the eyelid margin

Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelid margin, the area at the base of the eyelashes, where the small glands that produce the oily layer of tears are located. When these become blocked or bacteria and scales build up, the eyelid becomes irritated.

It is a common and usually chronic condition. It rarely seriously affects vision, but it causes discomfort and is often associated with dry eye.

It is not completely cured, but it is controlled. With an eyelid hygiene routine, symptoms can be kept under control in the long term.

Types of blepharitis

After the affected area

Anterior blepharitis

It affects the outer part of the eyelid, at the base of the eyelashes. It often occurs due to bacteria or scales (similar to dandruff), sometimes associated with seborrheic dermatitis.

Posterior blepharitis

It affects the inner part of the eyelid, at the level of the Meibomian glands. It occurs when these glands become blocked, leading to a poor quality tear film and dry eyes.

How it manifests itself

Red and swollen eyelids Burning or stinging sensation Lashes with crusts, stuck together in the morning Itchy eyelids Foreign body sensation Dry eyes and tearing Sensitivity to light Eyelashes that fall out or grow abnormally

Related eyelid conditions

Problems that often occur together

Blepharitis can promote or accompany other eyelid conditions. We evaluate and treat all of them during the same consultation.

Orjelet (jug)

Acute, red, and painful infection of a gland at the base of the eyelash.

chalazion

Painless lump, formed by a blocked gland, that persists for a longer period of time.

Entropion

The eyelid turns inward, and the eyelashes rub the surface of the eye.

Ectropion

The eyelid droops outward and no longer protects the eye well.

Diagnostic

A careful examination of the eyelids

The diagnosis is made at the consultation, by examining the edge of the eyelids, eyelashes and glands. We determine the type of blepharitis and the cause, for appropriate treatment.

Biomicroscope examination of the eyelid margin and eyelashes.

Eyelid hygiene routine

Four simple steps, every day

Done regularly, eyelid hygiene keeps blepharitis under control. Here is the basic routine, which we adapt for you during your consultation.

1

Warm compresses

Apply a warm compress to your closed eyelids for a few minutes to soften the secretions.

2

Light massage

Gently massage the eyelid from the base to the edge to release the glands.

3

clean

Gently cleanse the edge of your eyelashes with a product recommended by a doctor.

4

Repeat daily

Continue the routine as maintenance, even after symptoms improve.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do? you know

Is blepharitis contagious?

No, blepharitis is not contagious. It is an inflammation related to the glands and skin of the eyelids, not an infection that is transmitted from one person to another.

Why does it always come back to me?

Blepharitis is a chronic condition, with periods of improvement and activity. Therefore, eyelid hygiene should be continued as a maintenance routine, not just when symptoms appear.

Can I wear makeup or contact lenses?

During active flares, it is recommended to avoid eye makeup and reduce contact lens wear. Your doctor will tell you when you can resume wearing them and which products are suitable for sensitive eyelids.

Does blepharitis affect vision?

It usually does not directly affect vision. It may cause intermittent blurred vision due to poor tear film quality, which clears when blinking. Severe, untreated cases can lead to complications.

How long does it take to get better?

With proper eyelid hygiene, improvement occurs within a few weeks. Because it is a chronic condition, maintaining a routine prevents the symptoms from recurring.
