Laser refractive surgery
Operation myopia
Reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses and lenses through a modern laser intervention, adapted to your eye. At Oculens we use EXCIMER, FEMTOLASER and ReLEx SMILE.
What is myopia?
Blurred vision at a distance
Myopia occurs when the image focuses in front of the retina, not on it, and distant objects appear blurry. It is one of the most common refractive errors and can be permanently corrected with laser surgery.
By reshaping the cornea with laser, light is able to focus correctly on the retina. As a result, many patients are able to completely give up glasses and contact lenses.
Signs of myopia:
- blurred vision in the distance (signs, blackboard, television)
- squinting to see more clearly
- eye fatigue and headaches
- the need to sit close to the screen or book
- difficulty driving at night
Laser technology
Three techniques, one target
Depending on your diopters, corneal thickness, and lifestyle, we choose together the most suitable laser technique.
ERM
EXCIMER laser
Reshapes the surface of the cornea to correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Mature technique with time-proven results.
FEMTOLASER
High-precision laser technology, used in myopia correction and corneal flap creation, for a controlled and safe intervention.
ReLEx SMILE
The most modern technique, without a flap, through a very small incision. Painless, with quick recovery.
How it goes
intervention ReLEx SMILE
The procedure is performed with local anesthesia through drops, on an outpatient basis, and takes only a few minutes for each eye.
Preoperative evaluation
Detailed measurements of your cornea and eye to determine if SMILE is right for you.
Local anesthesia
The eye is anesthetized with drops, without injections, so the procedure is painless.
Femtolaser
The laser creates a fine disk of tissue (the lenticule) inside the cornea, without lifting a flap.
Lenticular extraction
The lenticule is removed through a small incision, and the cornea takes on the new shape that corrects myopia.
Eligibility
Are you a suitable candidate?
The appropriate technique and eligibility are determined by a complete preoperative evaluation, which includes corneal topography and pachymetry. If the eye is not suitable for laser, there is also the alternative of refractive lens implant.
See also the page LASIK/PRK for details about excimer laser techniques.
You are a good candidate if:
- you are over 18 years old and your diopters have been stable for at least one year
- myopia is within treatable limits (up to -12D with SMILE)
- the cornea has the right thickness and shape
- you have no active eye conditions
- you are not pregnant or breastfeeding

Frequently asked questions
What should I do? you know
Which laser technique is best for me?
It depends on the number of diopters, the thickness and shape of the cornea, and your lifestyle. The recommendation is made following a preoperative evaluation, together with the doctor.
Does myopia surgery hurt?
No. The procedure is performed with eye drops. In the case of ReLEx SMILE, the procedure is minimally invasive and painless, with minimal discomfort after the procedure.
What diopters can be corrected?
ReLEx SMILE can correct myopia up to -12D and astigmatism up to 5-6D. For values outside these limits, your doctor will recommend another suitable solution.
How long does recovery take?
Recovery after ReLEx SMILE is rapid, and many patients return to their normal activities shortly after. Vision gradually clears, as directed by the doctor.
What do I do if I am not a candidate for laser?
There is the alternative of refractive lens implant, especially recommended for very high diopters or when the cornea is not suitable for laser treatment.
