Ophthalmic surgery

The operation of cataract

Regain clear vision through a modern, safe and short-term intervention with an artificial lens implant.

What is cataract?

The lens loses its transparency.

Cataracts are clouding of the crystalline lens of the eye. They most commonly occur with age and lead to increasingly blurred vision, like looking through a fogged window.

The only effective treatment is surgery: the opacified lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens (intraocular implant), which remains permanently in the eye. It is one of the most common and safest interventions in ophthalmology.

Signs of cataracts:

  • blurred or dim vision, like through a fogged window
  • faded or slightly yellowed colors
  • sensitivity to light and halos around light sources
  • poor night vision, difficulty driving at night
  • frequent change of glasses diopters
  • sometimes double vision in one eye

How it goes

Intervention through phacoemulsification

The surgery is performed with local anesthesia through eye drops, on an outpatient basis, and generally takes 15 to 30 minutes for one eye.

1

Local anesthesia

The eye is anesthetized with drops, so the intervention is painless, without injections.

2

Minimal incision

A very small incision is made, usually without sutures, through which the lens is accessed.

3

Phacoemulsification

The opacified lens is fragmented with ultrasound and gently aspirated, protecting the eye structures.

4

Lens implant

A foldable artificial lens is inserted, which is placed in the position of the natural lens and remains permanently.

The implanted lens

Types of intraocular implant

Depending on your vision needs and your doctor's recommendation, the right type of artificial lens can be chosen. The intervention can also be performed with femtolaser assistance, for additional precision.

Monofocal lens

Provides clear vision at only one distance, usually far away. Glasses may be required for near vision.

Toric lens

It additionally corrects astigmatism, for clearer distance vision with less dependence on glasses.

Multifocal lens / EDOF

It ensures good vision at multiple distances and significantly reduces the need for glasses in everyday life.

Recovery

Clearer vision, in no time

Vision begins to improve within the first few days after surgery, and full recovery usually occurs within a few weeks. Most patients quickly resume their normal activities.

For optimal healing, it is important to follow your doctor's recommendations and attend scheduled post-operative check-ups.

After the operation:

  • use the prescribed drops according to the schedule
  • avoid rubbing the operated eye
  • avoid intense physical exertion for a few days
  • protects the eye from dust, water and bright light
  • come to the scheduled postoperative check-ups

Frequently asked questions

What should I do? you know

Does cataract surgery hurt?

No. The procedure is performed with local anesthesia through eye drops, and the patient does not feel any pain. At most, a slight sensation of pressure may be felt.

How long does the intervention last?

The surgery itself usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes per eye, plus preparation time and a short period of post-operative monitoring.

Does it require hospitalization?

In most cases, the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, without hospitalization. The patient goes home the same day, with postoperative recommendations.

Are both eyes operated on on the same day?

Typically, the eyes are operated on one at a time, at an interval established by the doctor, so that the first eye can heal before the intervention on the second.

Will I still need glasses after the surgery?

It depends on the type of lens implanted. With a monofocal lens, glasses may be required for certain distances, while multifocal implants significantly reduce dependence on glasses.
